Skillogalee was established in 1970 with the first wines released in 1976. The vineyards were planted in the early 1970s on what was then, at almost 50 0 metres above sea level, one of the highest vineyards in South Australia. The rows are planted on the contour in shallow stony soils mainly on steep eastern-facing slopes. The vines are hand-pruned and the fruit is mainly hand-picked. Yields are extremely low. The vineyard produces intense flavours and aromas and deep, richly-coloured reds.
Owned and operated by the Palmer family, Skillogalee has a small modern winery, enabling Dan Palmer and his father Dave to hand-make individual wines in small batches. Red wines are made using the best of traditional methods – open fermenters and basket pressing to maximize flavour and colour. Gentle fruit handling and meticulous hygiene standards enable minimum amounts of sulphur to be used. The wines are all estate grown.
Origins of the Name
‘Skilly’ is a gaelic word meaning ‘porridge’. John Horrocks, an early pioneer and explorer enjoyed a breakfast of Skilly when he explored the valley in the early 1840’s. He named the valley in its honour.
