The winery is next door to the Oakbank Racecourse (which was originally Johnston land). The Johnston family established the Oakbank township in 1855, five years after they laid out Woodside. They are the oldest family owned company in South Australia. Oakbank was originally the name of the Johnston property on which the Oakbank Brewery was constructed in 1843.
The ‘other' side of the Johnston story involves the hotel group which was established as a distribution network for Johnston ales, stouts and cordials. Today seven of these hotels remain in the Johnston family.
Currently the Oakbank property has vineyards producing premium Adelaide Hills fruit for the Johnston wines. Estate grown and made by highly acclaimed winemakers Geoff Johnston and David O'Leary, Johnston wines are renowned for their quality award winning products.
